800 years of history

Founded in 1216 by Cistercian monks from the abbey of Hocht, the Abbaye du Val-Dieu was born in a valley on the border between the county of Dalhem and the duchy of Limbourg. Its name, Valley of God, reflects the monks' wish to build a place of peace, prayer and work. Over the centuries, the abbey developed around monastic life, agriculture and artisanal know-how, becoming an important presence in the region. Since the departure of the Cistercian monks in 2001, the Christian Community of Val-Dieu has continued the tradition of prayer and welcome at the abbey, in connection with the monks of the abbey of Lérins (Côte d'Azur).

Abbey

The Abbaye du Val-Dieu was founded in 1216 by Cistercian monks from the Eberbach Abbey line in Germany. It is a fine ensemble of preserved buildings where every traditional function is still present today: church, brewery, prayer community, hospitality and gastronomy.

Brewery

The brewery of the Abbaye du Val-Dieu offers a range of recognised quality beers, brewed exclusively within the Abbaye du Val-Dieu. The range includes several beers: 4 traditional beers, 3 special editions and 1 limited edition, “Excellence”, aged in oak barrels with a unique character. The brewers have been carrying on this demanding craft for many years.

Cheese

A historic partner of the Abbaye du Val-Dieu, Terre de Fromages makes and matures Val-Dieu cheeses in the heart of the Pays de Herve. Heir to a history born from the collaboration between Cistercian monks and a local dairy, Terre de Fromages continues an authentic craft through a range of characterful cheeses made from milk collected directly from partner farmers in the region. Every day, its cheesemakers put their expertise at the service of the region's richness, keeping alive a gourmet tradition closely linked to the history and values of the abbey.
